HEMOGLOBIN (A1C)
What is it?The Hemoglobin A1c test is a very simple lab test that determines the average blood sugar level over the past three months. It also shows if a person's blood sugar level is generally normal, or too high.
Why do I need it?A normal A1C can lower the chances for serious eye, kidney and nerve disease in people with diabetes. The American Diabetes Association recommends that individuals with diabetes undergo this test every three to six months.
What do I do with the results? If your results are 'abnormal' or 'out-of-range' from the normal, please contact a health care provider. The interpretation of any laboratory test should be made only by a licensed nurse practitioner or physician.
